Published by richard sands on

With valentine’s day approaching, a surprise last minute trip away could be the perfect gift for your partner if you’re struggling for ideas. We have listed 7 beautiful cities which are perfect for a romantic getaway. Just book your flights, pack your suitcase and romance will only be one flight away.

1. Paris

It may be the obvious choice, but nothing beats Paris for a romantic Valentine’s Day. There is so much to see and do, from the top of the Eiffel Tower to the banks of the River Seine, and this city is full of beautiful things for visitors to enjoy. Travel to Paris is so easy too, either by plane or by Eurostar right to the heart of the city.

2. Venice

Venice is just a short journey too, but it genuinely is like stepping into another world. When the only way to get around is by boat or on foot, time slows down. Every corner you turn reveals another stunning vista, and after the buzz of St Mark’s Square, only a few minutes’ walk will take you to the secluded romantic places which make Venice a lovers’ dream.

3. Prague

Prague offers as much beauty and mystery as any visitor could want. Walk from the amazing Old Town Square over the Charles Bridge and up to the spectacular fortress of Vyšehrad to visit the relic of St Valentine himself! Or enjoy a leisurely cruise up the Vltava river or even a sightseeing flight for a different view of the city. Prague is, of course, one of the great centres for brewing – any connoisseur of good beer will love to sample traditional Czech pilsner in its original setting.

4. New York

If you have the time and the budget for a slightly longer break, New York is always an adventure. View the cityscape from the top of the Empire State Building or take a cruise round the island of Manhattan. Wander through the distinctive neighbourhoods of the West Village and Chinatown, enjoy the vibrant nightlife of the Meatpacking District, take in a show on Broadway or shop in some of the world’s most famous and fabulous stores.

5. Copenhagen

Another wonderful city for a short break is Copenhagen. Its top attractions include the historic amusement park of Tivoli Gardens, the statue of the Little Mermaid and the hippie free town of Christiana, as well as some of the most romantic castles and palaces in Europe. Copenhagen is also one of the hottest places for great food, with no fewer than 16 Michelin-starred restaurants.

6. Edinburgh

If you want something closer to home, why not visit Edinburgh? It’s a beautiful city, and you can walk through the heart of the Old Town along the famous Royal Mile, from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, or perhaps you’d prefer to enjoy a ‘nosing’ at the Scotch Whisky Experience. Edinburgh is one of the most cosmopolitan and sophisticated cities in the UK, with shops, restaurants, bars and nightlife to rival anywhere in the world.

7. Gower Peninsula

For some, the perfect Valentine’s Day break is to get right away from it all. If you want peaceful beautiful countryside and a wonderful coastline, the Gower Peninsula in Wales is the perfect destination. Find yourself a cosy cottage or a comfortable bed and breakfast, visit the stunning clifftops and beaches and enjoy a truly relaxing romantic stay.
